Laura Briggs

Master’s Level Clinical Intern

I graduated from Piedmont University with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology, and I am a Clinical Counseling Psychology graduate student at Brenau University.

My special interests include child and adolescent counseling. I have graduate-level training in play therapy, where I utilize play techniques to address and resolve developmental or behavioral difficulties such as emotional dysregulation, anxiety, impacts of family conflict, and a variety of other behavioral or emotional concerns. I am especially interested in exploring how play-based intervention can improve the academic abilities, social skills, and self-esteem of children with ADHD and learning disabilities.

My experience also includes trauma-informed counseling, including psychoeducation and mindfulness practices. As a Case Manager at Saprea and Hotline Advocate at The Cottage Sexual Assault Center & Children’s Advocacy Center, I provide crisis interventions to help individuals work through the emotional and cognitive impacts of trauma. As an intern at The Cottage, I was able to observe how trauma-informed care will not only address presenting issues brought on by trauma but prevent difficulties that adverse childhood experiences may cause in adulthood.

I use an individualized approach to counseling, integrating a variety of techniques to fit with each person while creating a safe, judgement-free space. I believe that our thought patterns determine our behaviors, and a strength-based, cognitive-behavioral approach can help clients harness their natural abilities and motivation towards making the changes they would like to see.

In my spare time, I enjoy knitting, home brewing, and cuddling up with my two cats, Madge and Chili.
