Hello!

It’s probably best if you know a little something about me as you are considering a really important step in your life and, should you choose to make it, you will probably be spending time with me each week.

To introduce myself, I am Dr. Melanie Covert. I received my Bachelors degree from Kennesaw State University, my Master of Science in Clinical Counseling Psychology from Brenau University and my Ph.D. in Sociology from Georgia State University. I am licensed by the State of Georgia as a Licensed Professional Counselor. That is a short way of saying I have undergone years and thousands of hours of training to be a counselor. In addition to Awakenings Counseling Center, I also serve as a professor of psychology.

To me, the best thing about seeing a therapist is that you are guaranteed a caring listener who is going to accept you without judgment. Many people lack this kind of support in their life. Every time I sit down with a new client and am granted the privilege of hearing their story, I feel honored. I know it can be scary and difficult to open up to someone and I appreciate that I am being invited into the lives of my clients. My goal is to be an advocate, a sounding board and a cheerleader for every person that I see. I have worked with a range of clients, utilizing evidence based practices. I have extensive experience working with depression, anxiety, adolescent challenges, trauma informed therapy and social skills training. I also specialize in short-term therapy helping college students and professionals in “layover” periods as they prepare to move into new phases.

My goal when working with any client is to equip the client with the skills to successfully navigate his or her own life in a healthy and rewarding way. I am an eclectic therapist. I draw from many theoretical orientations to create a therapeutic experience that is as unique as the individuals I encounter.

I’m so glad we’ve had this chat, I hope to meet you soon.
